A Journey of Awakening: Diana’s Story in Her Words

Diana Lankford, my journey so far.  I grew up in Texas and was one of those people who seemingly had my life all planned out.  I graduated from college at the age of 21 with a double major in accounting and business computer information systems.  I moved to Dallas after college and eventually started my own successful CPA practice, which I launched in 2007.  I had a solid career where I was respected by clients and peers that could effortlessly take me to my retirement years. I knew I was doing good work with my CPA practice, but I sensed deep within myself I was not living in my greatness.  Something in my life was undeniably imbalanced, leaving me unfulfilled.

Growing up, I had multiple traumatic experiences that left me with deep wounding.  As a result, I didn’t have the proper tools to navigate certain parts of my life in adulthood that would lead to harmony.  Instead, I attracted dysfunction and chaos despite the seemingly successful upward trajectory of my career.  As a result, I learned to numb myself as a way to escape.  By my 30s, I had the epiphany that I was the only common denominator for the parts of my life that were unfulfilling, and I sought healing through books, talk therapy, and a 12-step program, among other modalities.  Although very helpful, none of it brought me the wholeness I inherently sought.  Holding all that trauma in my body took its toll.  My body ached in places where it was so tight I couldn’t even move those muscles.

Gradually, I looked around Dallas and realized that my idea of the life I wanted had changed from my 21-year-old self.  My idea of my best life no longer included working in one of the Big Four powerhouse accounting firms at the top of a high-rise office in a major city.  In 2016, I moved to Colorado Springs in pursuit of living closer to Mother Nature, away from concrete buildings, highways that intertwined like spaghetti, and a city that lacked real green spaces. Settling into my new city, I sought out a massage therapist to help with the pain in my body, and by divine intervention, I was led to Frank, a trauma-informed body worker.

Things started to shift as Frank taught me how to connect into my body, how to feel safe in my body, and how to release trauma from my body in ways that did not overwhelm me.  He also taught me to tune into my own energy and how to control my energetic flow in ways that benefited me.  Sometime during all of this, I began meditating regularly and consistently.  In 2020, my meditations changed.  I began having spontaneous releases that looked like seizures that would last thirty minutes or more.  During these sessions, I began hearing messages and receiving visions from Spirit.  I thought I was witnessing myself having a mental breakdown.  To say I was terrified would be an understatement.  It was Frank who recognized what I was going through – a spiritual awakening – and kept me grounded. He helped me understand that my body was shedding all the trauma locked into various places within.

The crescendo to my awakening hit on 10/10/2020 and lasted many months.  Little did I know the most difficult months of my life were teaching me how to heal myself so I could turn that knowledge into helping others. This date left a definitive mark on my timeline.  I was shedding the old version of myself, and a new version emerged.  Death and rebirth.  It marked the day I stepped into my power and accepted the challenge to break through the glass ceiling of all this life has to offer – to remember who I am, to stop playing small, and to live up to my full potential.

During one meditation, my mind drifted to a friend of mine who just had surgery.  As I wondered how he was doing, I had a vision where I was standing over him lying in the hospital bed.  Instinctively, I raised my hand over his abdomen to send him healing energy.  As I did, I felt the acute pain in my own body so intensely that I physically bolted upright from lying down.  My friend confirmed the pain, the location of his surgery, and the hospital stay.  Later, I learned that I was giving him Reiki in that vision.  I had never heard of Reiki, let alone knew what it was.  I discussed my meditation vision with Frank, and he asked if I was interested in learning.  Yes, I was, and again, with divine intervention, it just so happened that a woman at his center was starting a Reiki class in two days.  From there, I became a Reiki Master in the Usui Reiki Ryoho tradition.

My Reiki Master suggested a session with a shamanic practitioner she knew.  I did not immediately sign up for a session, but again, divine intervention prevailed.  I ran into the shamanic practitioner at a holistic fair several months later.  After one session with her, the pain in my right shoulder blade that plagued me for decades never came back.  I knew I wanted to learn from her. I worked the Medicine Wheel under her wing, where I received my initiations, connected deeply with Spirit, and discovered my new way of being.  The training I received through the Medicine Wheel is where I felt my roots grow deeper and, like an eagle, my wings spread wide.  My healing journey finally started to make sense to me.

My shamanic practice is rooted in the Peruvian Q’ero tradition.  This tradition comes from the Andes mountains of Peru as direct descendants of the ancient Incan people.  My primary teachers, Jerri Doran, is initiated 4th level Kuraq Akeulleq Priest and Wisdomkeeper in the Peruvian Q’uero tradition, and Frank Chavez, a gifted individual who saw something in me and showed me the way, every step of the way, for which I will be forever grateful. The lineage that has been passed down to me includes, among others, Ginger Lee, Clarke St. Dennis, Don Antonio, John English, Rolling Thunder, and Alberto Villoldo.  I continue to learn and evolve and feel such gratitude for the gifts I have been given by Spirit.  Every person I met on my journey has been a stepping stone, leading me to my calling – helping others heal. With Spirit as my guide and the wisdom that has been passed down to me by my mentors and teachers, my intention is to help bring a greater wholeness, clarity, and self-realization to others on their own journey – to help others shine on.

With more than 25 years of experience, I am still a practicing CPA who loves working with my clients.  Shifting between my left brain with accounting and my right brain with energy work challenges me in a fulfilling way that leaves me with a feeling of wholeness.  I enjoy being active in my spare time. I love hiking, biking, roller skating, and lifting weights.  I also love my quiet time, where I enjoy reading and making art of all kinds.  More than any of those activities, I love music, the heartbeat of my soul.
